What is a passport? How to apply for it?
A passport is a document, issued by a national government, which certifies, for the purpose of international travel, the identity and nationality of its holder. The elements of identity are name, date of birth, sex, and place of birth. Most often, nationality and citizenship are congruent.
This is the Wikipedia definition of a passport. In India there are Regional passport offices caters the needs of citizens wish to apply for a passport. In Tamilnadu Regional Passport offices are present in Trichy, Coimbatore and Chennai.
http://passport.gov.in/ website provides Application forms, Penalties, Vigilance, Fees structure, Complaints&Suggestions, Tatkaal Scheme, Affidavits, FAQ, Passport Act / Rules, Online Registration etc., This is the official Government of India website that provides links to other regional passport office websites and status pages. The normal passport fee is Rupees 1000/-. For emergency Tatkaal scheme you have to pay Rs.1500 if you want passport with int 1-7 days of Application and Rs.1000/- in case you want it 8-14 days of Application.
You can fill online passport application or fillup the hardcopy and submit it in passport office or speed post office or regional passport cells.
